Discover East Yorkshire

From Dramatic Cliffs to lovely market towns

The stretch of East Yorkshire coastline between Flamborough Head and Spurn Point is a land of striking contrasts. Whether you are looking for the rugged drama of white chalk cliffs or the tranquil isolation of a shifting sand spit, this region offers a unique coastal escape.

Coastal Icons: The Great Bookends
  • Flamborough Head: This soaring peninsula is famous for its gleaming white chalk cliffs and the iconic Flamborough Lighthouse. Explore the sea caves at North Landing or take the cliff-top path to RSPB Bempton Cliffs, where half a million seabirds—including puffins and gannets—nest during the summer months.

  • Spurn Point: At the southern tip lies "Yorkshire’s Lands End." This narrow, three-mile sand spit curved into the Humber Estuary is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a haven for birdwatchers and those seeking "wild" solitude. You can climb the Spurn Lighthouse for panoramic views of the North Sea and the Humber. You cant now drive down because the road can be washed away by the sea, You can walk down from the visitor centre or go on a special safari vehicle down to the point. Booking is advisable for the tour. The vehicle only takes about 12 persons and it is a popular way to see the point.

Seaside Charm: Hornsea & Withernsea
  • Hornsea: A classic Victorian resort perfect for families. Visit Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake, for rowing and sailing, or explore the Hornsea Museum to learn about the town’s famous pottery heritage.

  • Withernsea: Known for its unique inland lighthouse (now a museum) and the distinctive castellated Pier Towers on the promenade. The sandy beaches here are perfect for a traditional day by the sea.

The Gateway Cities & Market Towns
  • Hull (Kingston upon Hull): I find this vibrant port city with a rich maritime history underrated by tourists. Don't miss The Deep, one of the UK’s most spectacular aquariums, or the Museums Quarter (all Quarter museums are FREE) in the Old Town, which features the Streetlife Museum and Wilberforce House. The Maritime Museum in the city centre is due to reopen soon (2026) after a major refit. Nearby is the Humber Bridge where there is a viewpoint. If you plan to travel across the Humber Bridge (great experience) you now have to pay online. You have until midnight the following day to pay.

  • Beverley: I love this stunning market town is dominated by the gothic masterpiece of Beverley Minster (FREE). The town has some great places to eat. Enjoy a day at the Beverley Racecourse or a walk across the historic Westwood pasture. If the ice cream man is there you must stop get one.

  • Pocklington: Nestled at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, Pocklington is home to the beautiful Burnby Hall Gardens, famous for its National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies. You can buy food to feed the fish. I love to watch the fish being fed. Lovely cafe at the gardens, Some summer Sunday afternoons they have brass band concerts. I always try and go if I can. Nearby, the Pocklington Canal offers peaceful towpath walks and boat trips.

A Taste of the Coast: Mr Moo’s Ice Cream

My trip to this coastline is not complete without a visit to Mr Moo’s Ice Cream Parlour in Skipsea. Located just a short walk from the beach via a scenic farm path, this award-winning parlour is a local legend. You can also get Mr Moos ice cream at Burnby Hall Gardens.

Real Dairy Quality: The ice cream is produced right on the farm using fresh milk and cream from local East Yorkshire herds.

  • The Flavors: With over 30 varieties ranging from classic Vanilla to more adventurous seasonal specials, there is something for every palate.

  • The Experience: You can enjoy a massive sundae in the vintage-style cafe or grab a cone to go as you wander down to the Skipsea cliffs. If you're lucky, you might even spot the cows responsible for your treat grazing in the nearby fields!
